Workshops

SunJuice offers workshops for the general public and building professionals. These workshops, described below, can be customized to suit a particular audience or schedule.

Solar Energy 101

The Basics of Solar Technologies

Previous Workshop Hosts

Colorado Renewable Energy Society, United States Green Building Council, CSU Institute for the Built Environment, Plymouth Congregational Church, City of Fort Collins.

Target Workshop Audience

This presentation can be tailored to any audience or technical level.

Purpose Of The Workshop

To increase understanding of the state of the art of solar energy technologies in a short timeframe.

Content Of The Workshop

The basics of passive solar design, solar electric (photovoltaic) technologies, and solar thermal technologies are explained.

Length Of Workshop

This lecture can be delivered in 50 minutes or include more detail in 1.5 hours.

Building Solar

Solar Design Fundamentals for Building Professionals

Previous Workshop Hosts

Colorado Renewable Energy Society, American Solar Energy Society.

Target Workshop Audience

Builders, architects, engineers, facility managers, energy managers, and developers.

Purpose Of The Workshop

To train building professionals in the fundamentals of solar energy design, enabling them to incorporate solar technologies (both photovoltaics and solar thermal) into their building projects. There are many designers who would like to use solar technologies in their projects but don’t know where to start. This workshop takes solar awareness to the next level, giving professionals the tools to make design decisions about solar technologies early on in the planning of a building project.

Content Of The Workshop

Participants will learn the fundamentals of design of solar energy systems and how to evaluate feasibility of using solar technologies in a particular project. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour at least one facility with a solar installation in the company of instructors and designers who can answer the most technical questions. Specifically, the workshop will cover:

  • History and Future of Solar Energy
  • The Solar Resource
  • Solar Thermal Technologies (liquid and air)
  • Solar Electric Technologies (retrofit and building-integrated)
  • Interconnection and Net Metering
  • Economics of Solar Energy
  • Solar Energy in the LEED Rating System

Materials To Be Provided To Attendees

  • Workshop agenda
  • Workbook with fundamentals by chapter
  • CD-rom with presentations and supplementary material (articles and case studies)

Zero Energy Homes

Workshop for Building Industry Professionals

Previous Workshop Hosts

City of Fort Collins, City of Longmont.

Target Workshop Audience

Builders, architects, engineers, and developers.

Purpose Of The Workshop

To introduce the concept of Zero Energy Homes to building professionals.

Content Of The Workshop

Zero Energy Homes (ZEHs) are a new generation of homes that combine the use of energy efficiency and renewable energy to produce as much energy as they consume on an annual basis. ZEHs are designed to maximize the use of solar electric, solar thermal, passive solar design, energy efficient design and energy efficient appliances and lighting in order to minimize or eliminate purchases of utility provided electricity and natural gas.

Homes utilizing ZEH design strategies and technologies offer a number of advantages over conventional homes built to existing codes and standards including improved comfort, increased reliability, energy price stability, and environmental sustainability.
The workshop includes introductions to modeling and analysis for zero energy, presentations on the thermal envelope, passive solar design, solar electric, solar thermal, mechanical systems and energy efficient appliances.

Materials To Be Provided To Attendees

  • Workshop agenda
  • CD-rom with presentations and supplementary material (articles and case studies)
